Information for MSU Faculty and Staff

The Center for Advanced Microscopy at MSU is here to support your research, teaching, and service / outreach activities with advanced microscopy intruments and experienced staff.

Get started with...

Assisted use of instrumentation

CAM Scientists can assist with use of any of the CAM's instruments with an associated hourly fee. Reach out to us by email to set up a consultation and get started.

Sample preparation

CAM Scientists can assist with a variety of sample preparation protocols, often using the lab's instruments, with an associated hourly fee. More information is provided on our Sample Preparation Instruments page and our Services pages. Reach out to us by email to set up a consultation and get started.

Research collaborations

CAM Scientists can collaborate to design experiments, discuss sample preparation procedures and/or directly assist, collect data with CAM's instruments, and help with data interpretation. Instrument use and sample preparation have associated hourly rates. Reach out to us by email to set up a consultation.

Student teaching and training

You can send your students to get help preparing samples and collecting data using the using the CAM's instruments.  CAM scientists can process samples and operate microscopes as service work at the operator assisted rates.

To become indepedent users, students must complete the relevant  graduate level course.  After completion of a class, students are qualified to operate the microscopes at the self-operator rate and are granted 24/7 access.  Special arrangements can be made for faculty and post-docs to attend classes.

Tours and demos, guest lectures

The CAM welcomes visitors for tours and demonstrations of all kinds and for all levels of background with our tools and technologies, including as part of a formal course. CAM scientsts are also excited to visit your classroom and provide guest lectures. Reach out to us by email to set up a consultation.

Collaboration on new equipment

As a University core facility, CAM scientists are dedicated to acquiring and supporting new advanced microscopy instrumentation. Our team can help with finding other interested collaborators, grant writing, instrument configurations, installation and management plans, reporting, etc. Reach out to Andy Elwood Madden to discuss.

Participation in outreach programs

Children and adults of all ages have fun getting a new prospective on their world and become engaged in science through microscopy. Consider partnering with the CAM as part of your K-12, REU, or adult education outreach programs. Reach out to us by email to set up a consultation.
