Electron Microscopy

Expand the options below to learn more about our electron microscopy services. We welcome you to reach out with any questions.

We offer the following services:

  • The CAM offers conventional TEM fixation and embedding procedures.
  • Negative staining for samples in suspension (Bacteria, virus, Lipids, etc.)
  • Sample specific nanoparticle staining
  • Immunogold experiments. Specific fixation and embedding procedures for each individual sample.
  • Thin sectioning of thin polymer films
  • TEM imaging and data collection.

For biological TEM services contact Dr. Alicia Withrow, pastorle@msu.edu.

See our Service and User charges page.

The CAM can assist with imaging and analysis of TEM samples, including

  • TEM mode imaging (BF/DF)
  • Selected area electron diffraction (SAED)
  • phase contrast imaging (HRTEM)
  • Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDS)

For physical sciences TEM services, contact Dr. Andy Elwood Madden, maddenan@msu.edu.

See our Service and User charges page.

The CAM can assist with a full range of specimen preparation equipment and data collection with various imaging and analysis methods.

We offer the following services:

  • Sample coating (gold, iridium, osmium, carbon)
  • Critical point drying
  • Freeze drying
  • Secondary Electron Imaging.
  • Backscattered Electron Imaging
  • Digital Imaging with user selectable pixel format (up to 20 Megapixels) and variable pixel dwell time.
  • Imaging of un-coated non-conducting samples
  • Stereo 3D imaging
  • Energy Dispersive X-ray Microanalysis (EDS)
  • SEM imaging from 5X magnification to 1,000,000X magnification
  • Advanced specimen preparation techniques including cryo-fracture, cryo-sectioning, and cryo examination
  • Video capability in SEM imaging
  • Replica techniques for very large samples

For SEM services contact either Amy Albin, albinamy@msu.edu, or Abby Vanderberg, vandera@msu.edu.
