For Students

The Center for Advanced Microscopy at MSU is here to support you, and we love working with students most of all! Don't hesitate to reach out with any microscopy-related questions, or even if you're just curious and want to stop by for a tour.

Get started with...

Assisted use of instrumentation

CAM Scientists can assist with use of any of the CAM's instruments with an associated hourly fee. Reach out to us by email to set up a conversation and get started.

Courses and training

Undergraduate and graduate students can get help from our team preparing samples and collecting data using the using the CAM's instruments.  CAM scientists can process samples and operate microscopes as service work at the operator assisted rates.

To become indepedent users, students must complete the relevant graduate level course.  After completion of a class, students are qualified to operate the microscopes at the self-operator rate and are granted 24/7 access.

Join the microscopy community

Interested in microscopy and want to be more involved? Talk to CAM scientists about ways to become more involved both at MSU, regionally with the Great Lakes Microscopy Society, and nationally through groups such as the Microscopy Society of America.

Participation in outreach programs

Children and adults of all ages have fun getting a new prospective on their world and become engaged in science through microscopy. We often could use volunteers to help out with our outreach programs. Or, if you help out with an outreach program in your disciplinary area, consider partnering with the CAM as part of the experience. Reach out to us by email to set up a conversation.

Research collaborations

CAM Scientists can collaborate to design experiments, discuss sample preparation procedures and/or directly assist, collect data with CAM's instruments, and help with data interpretation. Instrument use and sample preparation have associated hourly rates. Reach out to us by email to set up a conversation.

Sample preparation

CAM Scientists can assist with a variety of sample preparation protocols, often using the lab's instruments, with an associated hourly fee. More information is provided on our Sample Preparation Instruments page and our Services pages. Reach out to us by email to set up a conversation and get started.
