- Ul-Hamid (2018) A Beginners' Guide to Scanning Electron Microscopy. [MSU lib permalink]. Useful introductory overview.
- Echlin (2009) Handbook of Sample Preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis. [MSU lib permalink]. Helpful compendium of some tips and tricks for sample preparation.
- Flegler et al. (1993). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy : an introduction. [MSU lib permalink]. Standard textbook for MSU CAM electron microscopy courses, great introductory overview. The link allows you to view a pdf for a 2-hour checkout. There is also a hardcopy avaialble.
- Goldstein et al. (2018, 2003) Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis, 4th edition. 3rd edition. The 4th edition is much more current and written to be more readable, whereas the 3rd edition contains more detail. Both are valuable resources to download if you might use SEM for your career. This is often thought of as the most comprehensive SEM-EDS reference book to date.
- Wanner (2023) A Practical Guide to Scanning Electron Microscopy in the Biosciences. Fantastic, detailed, and up-to-date book focusing on the biosciences but highly useful and valuable for anyone working with SEM.
- Bozzola and Russell (1999) Electron Microscopy: Principles and Techniques for Biologists (2nd edition). Includes both SEM and TEM, although an emphasis on TEM. Lots of great background and examples.
